Know Your Eligibility
Medicare eligibility generally begins at age 65, but there are a few important details to consider:
Turning 65
: You’re eligible to enroll in Medicare when you turn 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and extends three months after.
Disability
: If you’re under 65 and have a qualifying disability, you may be eligible for Medicare after 24 months of receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
: If you’re covered by a group health plan through your employer or spouse’s employer, you can sign up for Medicare later without penalty. SEPs are triggered by specific life events, such as changes in employment status.
